At Asia’s Sprawling Computex Show, NVIDIA Technology Stretches from VR to Virtualization

Ground zero for Computex Taipei, Asia’s largest technology show, is the sprawling half-million square feet of Nangang Exhibition Hall.

The region’s entrepreneurial energy is on vivid display within the hall, which is partially wrapped with NVIDIA branding. Fledgling companies like DuckyChannel tout its range of keyboards tied to the Chinese zodiac. Groovy Technology Corp. draws the curious with low-cost digital signage. In a carpeted corner, Be Quiet! displays its sound-dampened desktops.

And major hometown Taiwan names from Acer to Zotac are demoing NVIDIA technology. More than a dozen companies are among them, including ASUS, Clevo, Colorful, EVGA, Galaxy, Gigabyte, Innovision, Inwin, Leadtek, MSI, Supermicro and Thermaltake, as well as Microsoft.

German automaker Audi is debuting to Taiwan’s consumers its new A4 sedan, featuring a virtual dashboard powered by the NVIDIA Tegra system on a chip. It’s also giving consumers a peek at its newvirtual showroom experience. It uses VR to enable consumers to tour any Audi vehicle — from its ferocious R8 coupe to its capacious Q7 SUV — as if it’s in the room, and to see it in varying styles and colors.

MIT Lab is showing off the fruits of its collaboration with Taiwan’s Institute for Information Industry on a new type of vehicle for urban commuting. Called the Persuasive Electric Vehicle, or PEV, it looks like an electric tricycle with a protective roof. Based on NVIDIA technology, it’s expected to go on trial in Taiwan next year.

And in a sign of how Computex and Taiwan as a whole have evolved far beyond consumer electronics, Gigabyte and Supermicro are displaying systems based on the Tesla M10 GPU accelerators, which drive virtualized applications across multiple desktops.

Di penghujung minggu pertama Mei 2016, kado kejutan dari NVIDIA akhirnya dibuka. Yap, isinya tidak lain adalah dua jagoan terbaru dari NVIDIA di kelas high end – GeForce GTX 1080 dan GTX 1070. Teknologi generasi terbaru tentu saja telah menunggu di dalam graphics card GeForce 1000 Series tersebut. Implementasi arsitektur GPU Pascal 1st Generation sebagai penerus Maxwell 2nd Generation, mengecilnya proses fabrikasi dari 28 nm menjadi 16 nm FinFET, penggunaan tipe memori GDDR5X dengan bandwidth lebih tinggi dibandingkan GDDR5 adalah sejumlah daya tarik yang ditawarkan NVIDIA kali ini. Tidak sampai disitu saja, klaim performa dari NVIDIA bahkan menyebutkan jika satu GeForce GTX 1080, lebih kencang dibandingkan TITAN X – kasta tertinggi graphics card dengan basis GPU Maxwell 2nd Generation atau dua GTX 980 SLI.

Otak di balik GeForce GTX 1080 tidak lain adalah chip GPU GP104 dengan 7,2 milyar transistor dan 2560 CUDA Cores di dalamnya. Tentu saja hal tersebut membuat kami “terbelalak” mengingat graphics card Maxwell membutuhkan pendingin ekstrim liquid nitrogen dan parameter setting “tidak biasa” untuk mencapainya. Tidak sampai disitu saja, kemampuan GTX 1080 tersebut dicapai hanya menggunakan satu konektor daya PCIe 8-pin dengan kebutuhan minimum power supply sebesar 500 Watt. Bahkan GTX 1080 hanya memiliki nilai graphics card power sebesar 180 Watt, jauh lebih rendah dibandingkan GTX 980 Ti dan TITAN X dengan 250 Watt.

Sisi bawah PCB GeForce GTX 1080 dilengkapi lempengan logam backplate yang terbagi menjadi dua bagian.

GeForce GTX 1080 juga datang dengan standar konektivitas display masa depan seperti tiga konektor Display Port 1.4 dengan dukungan teknologi HDR dan mampu menghadirkan resolusi gambar 7680×4320 @60 Hz. Terdapat pula satu konektor HDMI 2.0b dan Dual Link DVI-D.

NVIDIA menetapkan dua kisaran harga jual untuk GeForce GTX 1080 yaitu $599 dan $699 untuk Founder Edition. GTX 1080 saat ini memang belum dijual resmi di pasaran dan akan mulai menjejakkan kakinya pada 27 Mei 2016 medatang. Akan tetapi siapa menyangka jika sejumlah produsen graphics card mulai memajang produk jagoan mereka yang akan siap “menggempur” pasaran pada akhir bulan ini. Di gelombang awal, tampaknya para produsen akan melepas produk GeForce GTX 1080 Founder Edition dan akan menyusul versi lainnya di minggu-minggu atau bulan-bulan berikutnya.
